Established in 1958, Winston House offers accommodation
for 27 men and women aged 18 to 65, with a past/present mental
illness.
The house runs on therapeutic community principles. Every
service user plays an important part in the decision making
processes within the house and each individual has a personal
responsibility to the community as a whole.
All service users are supported and encouraged to develop
their daily living skills by participation in collective domestic
activities which include cooking, cleaning and shopping as
well as being responsible for their personal hygiene and keeping
their own rooms clean and tidy.

All service users are expected to fulfil these responsibilities
to the best of their ability with appropriate staff support.
Through the development of individualised care programmes, service
users progress through the process of rehabilitation with the ultimate
aim of achieving the level of independence necessary to live in
the wider community.
The length of stay does depend on the needs and progress of each
individual resident. However, Winston House's service users tend
to stay between 3 and 4 years on average, before moving on to more
independent accommodation.
All service users are provided with the opportunity to take advantage
of the variety of day time activities on offer in Cambridge, including
day centres providing creative activities and a sheltered workshop
scheme. Some residents attend courses at the local further education
college and others have participated in voluntary work. A dedicated
group also puts a considerable amount of work into attending the
garden at the Project.
