Trevayler is a residential rehabilitation project
offering accommodation and 24 hour care for individuals from
the ages of 18-65 recovering from mental health problems.
The challenge to Trevayler's service users comprises the acquisition
and development of the necessary skills and knowledge to provide
a firm basis for successful living within their community.
The house is a large Victorian building surrounded by spacious
gardens situated approximately one mile from the centre of
Derby. Each service user has their own fully furnished room,
equipped with wash hand basins.

The house is designed in such a way as to ensure each service user
has a defined pathway towards independent living. The main area of
the house accommodates 14 service users who participate in the collective
processes of cooking, cleaning and shopping. The next stage of the
house programme involves the service users moving into the semi-independent
annex which provides accommodation for a further four people.
The final stage of the rehabilitation process is the move to the
detached cluster house, set in the gardens of Trevayler, which provides
a short term experience of more independent living for 5 service
users prior to moving on from Trevayler. In total Trevayler caters
for 23 service users over a short to medium term duration.
Trevayler
is a therapeutic community. Every service user plays an important
part in the decision making process within the house and contributes
fully to the life of the community. All service users are supported
and encouraged to develop their daily living skills by participation
in collective domestic activities as well as being responsible for
their personal hygiene and keeping their rooms clean and tidy. All
service users are expected to fulfil these responsibilities to the
best of their ability.
Trevayler seeks to create a balance providing group work within
the project and, where possible, service users are involved in external
groups enabling ongoing links outside the project. Some examples
of the groups are gardening, discussion, sports/fitness, menu planning,
reading and welfare along with meetings specific to the semi-independent
annex and the cluster house.
Trevayler works closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary
team to ensure that the work we are doing compliments the work of
other professionals. In order to work towards rehabilitation, individual
care programmes based on achievable goals are developed for each
service user.
Trevayler's
success can be measured by the large number of service users who
move on to live with greater independence.
